Senator Maltese Receives Perfect Score

Senator one of only five in State Senate to receive 100% score.

Senator Serphin R. Maltese (Queens) today said he was honored to receive a 100% perfect rating on the League of Humane Voters of New York City scorecard, which tracks lawmakers’ votes for and against legislation to protect animals.

“I am so pleased to be receive this rating from the League of Humane Voters,” said Senator Maltese.  “As an adamant animal lover and protector of animal welfare and their rights, I have always supported measures that would benefit the health and well-being of animals.  I look forward to continuing to work together with the League of Humane Voters and its membership.”

New York's 62 State senators were graded based on their support for the following bills:

1. banning the slaughter of horses for food;
2. prohibiting felons from owning dangerous dogs;
3. penalizing spectators at dogfights;
4. banning the genital electrocution of fur-bearing animals;
5. imposing a moratorium on the opening of new live markets;
6. allowing children to hunt (which LOHV-NYC opposes);
7. requiring fur products to be labeled real or faux;
8. protecting downed animals;
9. allowing police and peace officers to rescue dogs in hot cars;
10. banning cosmetic animal testing where proven alternatives are available.

According to John Phillips, LOHV-NYC’s Executive Director, only five of 62 State Senators received a perfect rating, with the average score being 89%.

“Pets and animals give us so much - they provide protection, comfort, companionship  and  assistance.   As  a  responsible  society, I believe we cannot  turn  a blind eye toward animals and must look after their fate and welfare,” said Senator Maltese.
