Phillies win 11th straight

September 25, 2010

Joe Blanton threw seven strong innings and Carlos Ruiz hit a tie-breaking RBI single as the Philadelphia Phillies won their 11th straight game.

The Phillies beat the New York Mets 3-2 to edge closer to the National League East division title.

With eight games remaining, the Phillies' magic number for clinching their fourth straight division title is two.

The magic number represents the combination of wins by the Phillies and defeats for their nearest rivals that would clinch the division title.

That number fell when Atlanta lost 8-3 at Washington on Friday night.

The Phillies' winning streak is their longest since a 13-game winning streak in 1991.

The two-time National League champions are 45-15 since July 21, when they trailed Atlanta by seven games.

Blanton allowed two runs and six hits, striking out six. Ryan Madson pitche a perfect eighth inning, and Brad Lidge came in for the ninth and posted his 27th save in 33 chances and fourth in four games.
