Lindsay Lohan back in jail for failing drugs test

September 25, 2010

Troubled US starlet Lindsay Lohan was sent back to jail Friday after failing a drugs test and violating her bail, just over two months after she got her first taste of life behind bars.

Judge Elden Fox of the Beverly Hills Superior Court denied bail to the 24-year-old after she tested positive for cocaine in a court-ordered test.

Lohan, who appeared stunned as she was led away in handcuffs, could be in jail for up to 30 days, after the judge set her next probation hearing for October 22.

Reports ahead of the court hearing had suggested she would get bail, and she arrived at the court dressed in what fashion-watchers said were Louboutin stilettos with a black top and white pleated skirt.

A mug short released by the Los Angeles Police Department after she was detained showed her staring into the camera, in an orange prison gown.

Jail officials indicated there would be no early release for the actress. The judge refused to hear arguments from her lawyers that she should be given bail because of the relatively minor nature of the charges against her.

"Ms. Lohan cannot be released early because this isn't a jail sentence," said LA Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

"She's being held by court order until her hearing on Oct. 22. She will be held in the same conditions as her last stay, in a keep-away unit," he told People magazine.

Lohan's father Michael lashed out at the judge's decision.

"My daughter's in jail. I'd rather be in jail rather than my daughter today," he told reporters outside the court house.

Lohan was sentenced on July 6 to serve 90 days in jail and another 90 days in rehab for violating her probation in a drunk-driving case.

Due to jail overcrowding, however, she served just 13 days behind bars, before being released to the detox facility.

Last week she was forced to admit having failed a drugs test after the TMZ celebrity website and People Magazine said she had tested positive for cocaine use.

A queen of Hollywood nights and a favorite target of the paparazzi, the former Disney child star was once considered one of the most promising actresses of her generation.

But Lohan's career has dipped many times since 2005 amid legal woes, stops in rehab and cinematic flops.

In 2008, the star of "The Parent Trap," "Mean Girls" and "Bobby" received two Razzie Awards, the satirical prizes presented to Hollywood's worst acting performances.

In a Twitter post admitting the failed drugs test last week, Lohan said she was a "work in progress."

"This was certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences... Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away overnight," she said.

And she added: "I am so thankful for the support of my fans, loved ones and immediate family, who understand that I am trying hard, and taking positive steps .. but also that I am a work in progress, just as anyone else.

"I am keeping my faith, and I am hopeful... Thank you all!!!" she wrote.
