Opening reception of Jan Sawka: The Place of Memory (the Memory of Place) Exhibition

February 08, 2020

Join us for the opening reception of Jan Sawka: The Place of Memory (the Memory of Place) exhibition curated by Hanna Maria Sawka and Dr. Frank Boyer, which will open today, Saturday, February 8th , 5–7 pm at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art (SDMA) at SUNY New Paltz.

This season’s flagship exhibition at SDMA features paintings and etchings that illuminate Sawka’s visual explorations of the phenomenon of memory, identity, and sense of loss that only exile can bring, situated in the Hudson Valley landscape in New York.

Jan Sawka was a Polish visual artist of international acclaim based from 1985 until his death in 2012 in High Falls, just over the mountain from New Paltz. Throughout his career, he won major awards including the “Oscar de la Peinture” and “Special Prize of the President of France” at the International Festival of Painting in Cagnes-Sur-Mer in 1975, and the “Excellence in Architecture Award” from the American Institute of Architects (2010). His work is in the collections of over 60 museums around the world. On view through July 12, 2020
