A timely discussion with Polish Ambassador to the U.S. Piotr Wilczek and German Ambassador to the U.S. Emily Haber as they discuss the relationship between Poland and Germany over the last 30 years, at the current moment, and into the future.
In 1989, peaceful protest movements first in Poland and then in East-Germany led to the end of communism and free elections in both Poland and East-Germany, followed by German reunification and the intensification of German-Polish reconciliation. Over the last 30 years, the two countries have engaged in innumerable political, economic, and cultural initiatives to ensure close relations as strategic partners in NATO and the European Union. What are the results of these initiatives for modern German-Polish relations? In the more turbulent 2020s, what are the prospects for the future of this special relationship and its contribution to European and international affairs?
