NEW YORKERS: PREPARE FOR HAZY, HOT, AND HUMID WEATHER

June 26, 2007

For the next three days the heat index in New York City is predicted to be in the 90s. With this increase in heat and humidity, OEM stresses the need for New Yorkers to limit their time outdoors and keep cool.

During this hot and humid week, New Yorkers should hydrate, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and stay in the shade when outside. Remember to check on neighbors who may need assistance. Seniors, young children, and people with special needs are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

Other ways New Yorkers can stay cool:

    •     Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes
    •     Keep body temperature low by taking cool baths or showers, but avoid extreme temperature changes
    •     Use an air conditioner if you have one

New Yorkers can also expect high ozone levels, which make air quality poor. Ozone can cause breathing problems, especially among those with respiratory conditions. To avoid ozone-related respiratory problems, people should limit outdoor activity particularly during afternoon and early evening hours.
