Gunman escapes with $1.5 million in Vegas chips

December 15, 2010

A man walked up to a craps table at the the Bellagio hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip, pulled out a gun and stole some 1.5 million dollars in gambling chips, news media reported Wednesday.

He stuffed the chips into a backpack then ran to the door and fled on a black motorcycle, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

Security surveillance footage broadcast on television shows a man carrying a handgun in his right hand and wearing a motorcycle helmet running down the hotel corridor. His face is not visible.

The heist took place around 3:50 am on Tuesday. No shots were fired during the incident, and there were no injuries, media reported.

The robbery took between two to three minutes, police said.

"He parked, walked in, committed the robbery and left," Clint Nichols with the city police told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Gambling chips however are unique to each casino, so the thief is likely to have difficulty redeeming his loot at the Bellagio.

Some gambling chips even have radio-frequency identification, but Las Vegas media said it was unclear if the stolen chips Bellagio had such technology.
