“Untold Wajda: Blokowisko” is a contemporary dance-theatre work based on a story Andrzej Wajda never brought to the screen. The U.S. premiere takes place at La MaMa in New York (66 East 4th Street) on October 22–25, 2026. Tickets range from $10 to $50.
In 1972, Andrzej Wajda heard a true story from an actor that stayed with him. He planned to make it into a film, but never did. More than half a century later, that story is given a body and a voice for the first time – not on screen, but on stage, through dance.
“Untold Wajda: Blokowisko” (The Estate) marks the centenary of the Oscar laureate’s birth. It weaves live electronic music, socially charged choreography and immersive three-screen video into a landscape of memory, loss and resilience.
The artists behind the production
The work was created by composer-performer Blanka Barbara Stahl with BAFTA-winning choreographer Anthony Matsena and producer Ignatius Sokal of UNTOLD Productions. It is presented under the patronage of Krystyna and Daniel Olbrychski, close friends of Andrzej Wajda.
“Blokowisko” premiered to a sold-out house at London’s Southbank Centre in March 2026. Battery Dance is now partnering with UNTOLD Productions to bring it to New York, with artists from Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
