The Zadroga Act, a compensation fund for 9/11 victims, also known as the 911 VCF, which stands for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, was established by the federal government in 2002 to help families of those who died in the attacks, as well as first responders, World Trade Center workers, and Lower Manhattan residents who could no longer work due to 9/11-related illnesses.
The fund also pays compensation to families of individuals who died from illnesses acquired due to being in the contaminated WTC zone. If the victim died from such an illness, heirs can receive an additional $250,000, and if they had children under 18, an additional $100,000 is awarded for each minor child and $100,000 for the spouse.
An important condition for receiving compensation, however, is to submit an application within the strict deadline of 2 years from the date of the victim’s death.
