From Manuscript to Computer

Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the artists most closely associated with the history of St. Peter’s Basilica. His Pietà and the dome of the church, which he designed, remain enduring testimonies of this connection. Now, modern typography also draws upon the artistic legacy of the Renaissance master.

The new font, named Michelangelus, was designed by studiogusto® commissioned by the Fabbrica di San Pietro. It was created to mark the 400th consecration anniversary of the Vatican basilica, which took place on November 18, 1626. The project combines the artist’s historical manuscripts with the capabilities of modern digital technologies.

More Than Just Copying Letters

The creators did not limit themselves to reproducing letter shapes or imitating Michelangelo’s calligraphy technique. They analyzed his distinctive, resolute handwriting, searching for the proportions, rhythm, and harmony characteristic of it.

The goal was to translate these features into a contemporary typeface that preserves the recognizable character of the artist’s manuscripts while remaining legible and functional.

Thus, Michelangelus bridges Renaissance manuscripts with vector graphics, the artist’s hand movement with digital design, and historical archives with the tools used daily by millions of people.

Over 500 Characters

As a result of detailed research, testing, and design work, a font family comprising over 500 glyphs—the graphical representations of characters—was created. Michelangelus comes in four variants: regular, italic, bold, and bold italic.

The font was developed with a variety of applications in mind—both in print and in digital documents. It meets the technical requirements enabling its use in Microsoft 365 applications.

Free for Everyone

Michelangelus can also be downloaded and installed for free. It is available to individual users and organizations worldwide. The licensing terms are designed to simultaneously protect the integrity and distribution methods of the entire font family.

The project is one of the digital initiatives entrusted to Microsoft by the Vatican’s Fabbrica di San Pietro. Their goal is to promote and share the cultural heritage associated with the Vatican Basilica.
