Authorities identified the officers as Roger Castillo, who was killed at the scene, and Amanda Haworth, who died a short time later during surgery.

Gunfire erupted as police entered the home in the low-income Liberty City neighborhood looking for several wanted criminals including murder suspect Johnny Simms, who was killed in the shootout.

“They made contact with a member of the family who said that they would be right back,” Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez told reporters at the scene. “They didn’t come out. Obviously, they encountered the subject. There were gunshots exchanged.”

Simms, 23, was described by Miami-Dade Police Director James Loftus as a “career criminal,” who was released from prison last year after serving time for armed robbery.

Area schools were put on lockdown while police investigated.
