NY: “That Most Important Thing: Love” by Andrzej Żuławski at Quad Cinema

Five years before “Possession,” Polish émigré Żuławski crafted this equally intense and dazzling study of “amour fou.” Romy Schneider (in a César award-winning turn) stars as an aging Parisian actress slumming it in seedy B-movies who falls in with photographer Fabio Testi, ditching cinéphile beau Jacques Dutronc in the process. Featuring Klaus Kinski as an eccentric actor and music by Georges Delerue (echoing his score for “Contempt”), this lost masterpiece of Żuławski’s finally comes to US theaters in its original French-language version. A Rialto Pictures release.
