The explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred on the night of April 25-26, 1986.

“Today marks the 40th anniversary of the tragic accident in Chernobyl, which left its mark on the conscience of all humanity. It remains a warning against the dangers associated with the use of increasingly powerful technologies,” the Pope said after the Regina Coeli prayer.

The Holy Father also expressed hope that prudence and responsibility will always prevail at all decision-making levels, so that every use of atomic energy may serve life and peace.

“Let us entrust to God’s mercy the victims of this tragedy and all those who still feel its effects,” said Leo XIV.
