Cooperation and the end of the war
Card. Parolin, answering journalists’ questions during a conference at the Pontifical Urban University, noted that the Holy See counts on the ability of American politicians to cooperate. He expressed hope that common sense and sound judgment will prevail, and that the upcoming changes will bring positive results.
As he emphasized, the Vatican expects these changes to contribute to ending the war in Ukraine and other conflicts. “We have long called for doing everything possible to close this extremely painful chapter,” he said.
Referring to Leo XIV’s absentee voting in the US elections, he noted that as a citizen of the United States, the Pope has every right to do so.
Agreement with China remains in force
The Cardinal also referred to Vatican-China relations and the agreement regarding episcopal appointments, which has already been extended twice. He stressed that the principles remain unchanged, and appointments are made in accordance with the arrangements and with the Pope’s consent.
During the meeting at the Urbaniana, commemorating the centenary of the ordination of the first six Chinese bishops by Pius XI, Parolin emphasized the importance of the unity of the Chinese Church with the universal Church and the Pope, while preserving its national identity.
Improving what is imperfect
Alluding to the statement by Abp. Paul Richard Gallagher, head of Vatican diplomacy, who pointed out the imperfections of the Sino-Vatican agreement, Card. Parolin admitted that every arrangement has its limitations.
He emphasized that negotiations with China were particularly difficult due to the complicated situation and the conditions under which both sides had to operate. However, he noted that dialogue remains open, and the centenary of the ordination of the first Chinese bishops is a sign of hope. “We are moving forward, trying to improve what is imperfect,” he concluded.
