A bank transfer from the U.S. to Poland can go to an account at any Polish bank, in złoty, dollars or euros. You only need the IBAN; no SWIFT code is required. Send in the account’s currency, or the recipient’s bank will convert the money at its own rate.
For many Polish American families, sending money to Poland is not a one-time event but a fixed part of the month. Some help support their parents; others have bills or other obligations to cover back in Poland.
In those cases, a transfer straight into the recipient’s bank account is often the most practical choice. U.S. Money Express Co. lets you send one from the U.S. to an account at any bank in Poland. Below is what to keep in mind so the money arrives in the currency and amount you planned.
Which accounts in Poland can receive a transfer, and what details are needed?
Accounts at any bank in Poland, held in Polish złoty (PLN), U.S. dollars (USD) or euros (EUR). The account does not have to be at the company’s partner bank.
All you need is the account number in IBAN format. A SWIFT code is not required. Along with the account number, have the recipient’s full name and address ready. For transfers sent online, you also enter the purpose of the transfer, which is required for European countries.
It is best to copy the IBAN from a statement or ask the recipient to send it in writing, for example by text message. When a long number is read out over the phone, a single wrong digit is an easy mistake.
Why does the transfer currency have to match the account currency?
Because if the currencies differ, the recipient’s bank will convert the money at its own exchange rate. Dollars sent to a złoty account, for example, will be converted at that bank’s rate rather than the rate set when you sent the transfer.
So before your first transfer, ask the recipient which currency their account is held in. Many people in Poland keep a separate złoty account and a separate foreign currency account, each with its own number.
Should you enter the amount to send or the amount to be received?
It depends on what the money is for. At online.usmoneyexpress.com you can enter either the amount you want to send or the amount the recipient should receive.
The amount to be received is useful when a specific expense in Poland has to be covered, such as a bill for a set sum in złoty. The amount to send is convenient when you work with a fixed dollar budget, for example the same sum for your parents every month.
The company states that it guarantees an always current exchange rate. You can check the fee before sending with the online fee calculator or by phone. You pay with a U.S.-issued debit or credit card or from your own U.S. bank account; with a credit card, the issuer may charge a cash advance fee.
How can you organize regular support for family in Poland?
A simple routine helps with regular transfers:
- Confirm the IBAN and account currency with the recipient once, and carefully.
- Pick one way of entering the amount and stick with it, so months are easier to compare.
- Keep your receipts with the transfer numbers. You can check the status under transfer history in your online account or by phone.
If a “relative” suddenly calls with an urgent request for money, first call your family back at a number you know. How to spot this kind of scam is covered in a separate article in this series.
