Many Polish American families in New York, New Jersey and Chicago send money home on a regular basis. Some prefer to do everything from the couch. Others would rather talk to someone at the counter, and some never go online at all.

That is why it helps to know all three options and pick the one that suits you, or your parents.

How do you send a transfer to Poland online, step by step?

The easiest way is from home, at online.usmoneyexpress.com (the same service also opens at dolarydokraju.com).

  1. Sign up. Your email address is your login. You choose a password, accept the privacy policy and confirm your registration by email.
  2. Add the recipient. Enter their first name, last name and address. Adding the recipient’s phone number helps speed up contact.
  3. Choose the transfer type and currency. Options include cash in złoty delivered to the door by a Polish Post letter carrier, U.S. dollars paid out at a PKO Bank Polski branch, or a deposit to a bank account in Poland.
  4. State the purpose. It is required for transfers to European countries, Poland included.
  5. Enter the amount. Type either how much you want to send or how much the recipient should receive.
  6. Pay. Use a U.S.-issued Visa or MasterCard, debit or credit, or pay from your own U.S. bank account with the account and routing numbers.

If you pay from a bank account, you will need to submit a document proving the account is yours, once. If you pay by credit card, keep in mind that your card issuer may treat the payment as a cash advance and charge its own fee.

The online service handles transfers to Poland as well as to Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine.

How do you check the fee, cancel a transfer and track it?

Before you send, use the fee calculator (“Wylicz opłatę”, or estimate) in the online service. You can also ask about fees by phone at the toll-free number 1-888-273-0828.

If something is wrong, you can cancel the transfer yourself under Transfer History by clicking Cancel, for at least 30 minutes after it was issued. After that, a transfer can only be canceled if the money has not yet been paid out or deposited.

The status of every transfer appears in your transfer history. You can also check it by phone.

Depending on the amounts and how often you send, the company may ask the sender for ID: a driver’s license or State ID, a passport or a permanent resident card. It is worth keeping it at hand.

How do you send money through an agent or at an office?

If you would rather do it in person, go to a U.S. Money Express agent or office. You give your details and the recipient’s, choose the transfer type and pay. Sometimes you will be asked for ID.

Agents and offices accept cash, cashier’s checks, personal checks and money orders. After the transaction you get a receipt (Transfer Receipt). Before you accept it, check the recipient’s details, the amount and the payout location.

The receipt also shows the transfer number. Pass the number and the payout location on to the recipient, who will show ID when collecting the money.

Can you send money to Poland by mail, without the internet?

Yes. This option is meant for people who do not use the internet and have no agent nearby. You mail a completed order form together with payment: a cashier’s check, a personal check or a money order made out to U.S. Money Express Co.

Address the envelope to the Chicago office (5395 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60630) or the Greenpoint office (167 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222). For the form and details on sending by mail, call 1-888-273-0828.

Who can help with your first transfer?

For a first transfer, the simplest step is to call the toll-free number 1-888-273-0828. The Greenpoint office (167 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn) can be reached at 718-349-1320, and the main office in Chicago (5395 N. Milwaukee Ave) at 773-774-8787.

Services, addresses and contact details are listed in U.S. Money Express’s listing in the Polish Pages directory.
