For the Polish community in the USA, this is a small but practical convenience. Many institutions — banks for loans, landlords for lease agreements, government agencies for benefits, and sometimes even employers — want to know if a given person is “in good standing” with their taxes. Until now, this meant ordering a tax transcript or calling the IRS hotline, known for hours of waiting. A new report is designed to shorten this to just a few clicks.
What the report shows and where to get it
The Tax Compliance Report does not show income, the number of dependents, or filing status — only what is needed to confirm tax compliance. The report provides one of three statuses: compliant (all returns filed, all taxes paid on time), noncompliant (overdue return or unpaid tax debt), or compliance issue (e.g., installment payment plan, history of late payments, tax fraud penalty despite payment). In addition, it includes a list of filed returns, the potential amount of arrears, and — if applicable — late payments from the last 4 tax years and unfiled or late returns from the last 6 years.
Individuals and sole proprietors can download the report (Letter 6201) after logging into their Individual Online Account on irs.gov, under the “Records and status” → “Tax records” tab. Businesses (Letter 6574) do the same analogously through the Business Tax Account. Digital certificate authentication currently only works for the version downloaded from an individual account.
Why authentication matters
The core of the new feature is not the report itself — which previously existed as a regular PDF version — but the built-in digital certificate that allows the recipient (bank, government office, contractor) to verify that the document actually comes from the IRS and has not been altered. The IRS explicitly states: a screenshot, scan, or file created using “print to PDF” does not contain a certificate and does not count as an authenticated document — you must provide the original file downloaded from your account. Some browsers and PDF viewers on mobile phones do not show certificate details; the IRS recommends opening the original in Adobe Reader on a computer to view the full verification data.
“By providing a secure, digitally authenticated report, the IRS makes it easier for taxpayers to access important information and share it while protecting privacy and data integrity,” said IRS Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano while announcing the new feature.
Who benefits in a real way
The report has a broader scope than a traditional tax transcript — it covers more years and immediately provides a clear status instead of raw accounting data requiring independent interpretation. This is a convenient solution for anyone who needs to document tax reliability for a formal matter: a loan application, applying for a job requiring a financial background check, a government benefit, or another service asking for such proof. For businesses, a separate version is also available — Letter 6575 — confirming the absence of serious tax debt arrears when applying for a federal contract.
Practical advice: if your tax return for a given year was filed or paid recently, the report might not reflect it yet — the IRS states that payment updates take about 2 weeks, and tax returns take 4–6 weeks. It is worth factoring this into your schedule before submitting the report to a bank or government office.
Polish businesses and freelancers operating in the USA usually consult their tax filings and choice of proper business structure with a Polish-speaking accountant — the new report from the IRS account is an additional tool worth having on hand during any conversation with a bank or contractor, building on the expanded Business Tax Account we described at the end of August.
