Interview with Warsaw Uprising Participant

As the event began at 7:00 p.m., attendees gathered at the General Consulate for a historically detailed interview about interwar and World War II-occupied Poland. Mr. Malewicz, then a teenager and now one of the few surviving participants of the Warsaw Uprising, shared his experiences with clarity, humility, and poise. Moderated by a Consulate representative, the hour-long discussion covered life before World War II, the tough choices Poles faced under occupation, and the resilience that fueled the Uprising.

Interview with Mr. Malewicz

Mr. Malewicz spoke of his youth in pre-war Poland, describing a society upended by the outbreak of World War II. He described what felt like a necessity that motivated him and many of his compatriots in arms to join the resistance. Afterwards, he vividly depicted the makeshift tactics used by young fighters to arm themselves against a vastly superior armed enemy, including raids on Nazi controlled armories and reaching airdrops from what he assumed were some of the few American planes able to fly over the city. Audience members were captivated as he described intense street battles with Nazi forces and their collaborators, the turmoil of daily survival, and the bravery that defined those critical 63 days of resistance in Warsaw in 1944.

One of the most moving moments of the evening came when Mr. Malewicz shared his reunion with his mother after the war, after months of uncertainty and separation. His words served as not only a historical account but also a tribute to the enduring strength of Polish families and communities torn apart by war.

Post-Interview and Reception

Following the interview, Mr. Malewicz and his family received tokens of gratitude from the Consulate, honoring their sacrifice and preserving the memory of the Uprising. The evening concluded with a musical performance by the Chór Dziecięcy Polonia (Polonia Children’s Choir), who delivered powerful renditions of wartime poetry and songs related to the Uprising.

Guests were then invited to a reception, where they could personally meet Mr. Malewicz, exchange words of thanks, and reflect on the evening’s meaningful messages. Traditional Polish refreshments and snacks were kindly provided by Piast Meats and Provisions, adding a communal touch to the event.

The commemorative evening at the Polish Consulate not only honored the bravery of the Warsaw Uprising but also ensured that its legacy endures through the stories of those who experienced it.

Through one of the last remaining heroic individuals who witnessed the horror inflicted upon Poland 80 years ago, Mr. Malewicz’s testimony and the thoughtful organization of the event left attendees with an appreciation for the sacrifices made by many of our ancestors and fellow countrymen and women.
