Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner, says that papal support is intended for families who, like the family of Jesus, “had to flee and continue to flee because of war, hunger, persecution.”
Three trucks, one hundred thousand cubes that, when dissolved in a small amount of water, turn into nutritious energy soups with chicken, pasta, and vegetables. This is a “small gesture of tenderness” from Pope Leo XIV – and at the same time real support for Ukrainian families who, on the occasion of the Sunday of the Holy Family of Nazareth, falling on December 28, received humanitarian aid from the Vatican.
Help for those who walk the “painful path of exile”
Pope Leo XIV’s gift – as Cardinal Konrad Krajewski reports to the Vatican media – is an expression of concern for families who, like the family of Nazareth, “walk the painful path of exile in search of refuge,” experiencing the “dramatic condition of refugees, marked by fear, destitution, and uncertainty.” This gesture – the cardinal emphasizes – shows that God, “being born into such a family, always wants to be where man is in danger: where he suffers, where he flees, where he experiences rejection and abandonment.”
Closeness to suffering families
The Cardinal also notes that even before Christmas, through the Apostolic Almonry and nunciatures, the Holy Father sent financial aid to many countries. In the case of Ukraine, even before Christmas Eve, three trucks filled with humanitarian aid donated by the Korean company Samyang Foods arrived at the Vatican. They were then directed to the areas of the country most affected by the war. The transports safely reached their destination. As Cardinal Krajewski concludes, Leo XIV “not only prays for peace in the world and for families, but in a very concrete way tries to help them.”
