The rite took place according to the provisions of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, in the presence of designated persons and relatives of the deceased Pope. The ceremony concluded at 1:30 PM.
Around forty people – homeless, prisoners, migrants – stood at the threshold of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with a white rose in hand, paying tribute to their spiritual father. The flowers were collected by four children who, along with the masters of ceremonies, participated in the private burial ceremony. Around the square, pilgrims’ applause resounded continuously; they would later pray the Rosary together.
Tomorrow, on Divine Mercy Sunday, the College of Cardinals will celebrate Vespers in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Meanwhile, Pope Francis has returned to his “home”.
