Founded to promote the education and moral improvement of Polish immigrants in America, Niedziela was the Seminary’s first publication. Its pages offered readers a broad range of subjects, including religion, science, history, and literature, reflecting the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual interests of the growing Polish American population.
Through a collaboration with the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University and the Digital Michigan Newspapers project, all surviving issues of Niedziela held in the Institute’s collection, spanning 1891 to 1902, have been scanned and made accessible to the public.
Significantly, Niedziela is the first Polish-language newspaper to be included in the Digital Michigan Newspapers database, marking an important milestone in the preservation and accessibility of Polish American historical materials.
“Niedziela was the first publication of the Polish Seminary for the public. It was our first effort at public outreach to Polonia. Fr. Dąbrowski wanted to use the educational and cultural resources of what would become the Orchard Lake Schools to serve the whole community to uplift both our hearts and minds. It began a tradition of public engagement that continues today,” said Dr. John Radzilowski, Director of the Polish Institute of Culture and Research at Orchard Lake.
The digitization of Niedziela represents a significant contribution to the study of Polish immigration, Catholic education, ethnic journalism, and the development of Polish American institutions. Researchers, genealogists, students, and members of the public can now explore this historical publication online, gaining direct access to primary-source materials documenting the experiences of early Polish immigrants in the United States.
The Polish Institute of Culture and Research extends its sincere appreciation to the Clarke Historical Library of Central Michigan University and the Digital Michigan Newspapers project for their partnership and commitment to preserving this important chapter of Polish-American heritage.
