Iran’s Supreme Leader killed in massive US-Israeli attack. Three US soldiers dead, LOT canceled flights, and Polish defense minister flies to Washington for urgent talks with Trump.
End of 37-year dictatorship
Ali Khamenei, Iran’s 86-year-old supreme leader, was killed on February 28, 2026, in his office in Tehran. His death resulted from an Israeli airstrike, conducted as part of a joint US-Israeli operation — named by the Pentagon “Epic Fury”, and by Israel “Lion’s Roar”.
Iranian state media, which for several hours denied the leader’s death, confirmed it on Sunday, March 1. Along with Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter were killed, as well as National Security Council chief Ali Shamkhani and at least 40 high-ranking commanders of the Iranian regime.
President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Khamenei, one of the most evil men in history, is dead. This is justice for the Iranian people and for all Americans.”
America on high alert — three US soldiers killed
For 10 million Poles living in the United States, this escalation is not abstract news from a distant world. It is a real threat that directly affects America.
Three American soldiers were killed, and five were seriously wounded in an Iranian counterattack on a military base in Kuwait — CENTCOM confirmed on Sunday morning. Iran responded with a wave of missiles and drones aimed not only at Israel but also at US bases in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Security agencies in the US have been placed on high alert. Patrols around temples, synagogues, mosques, and diplomatic facilities have been strengthened — including in areas inhabited by immigrant communities, also Polish communities in Chicago, New York, or New Jersey.
The Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles, the largest outside Iran, took to the streets with American and Israeli flags, chanting “Freedom for Iran” and “No more ayatollahs.”
Poland reacts swiftly
Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the staff of the Polish embassy in Tehran is safe. “We are prepared for various scenarios,” he wrote on social media.
President Karol Nawrocki informed that Poland “was aware of military actions thanks to allied and coalition channels.”
The most important signal, however, came from the Ministry of National Defense: Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz will fly to Washington on March 1 for a meeting with President Trump. The main topic will be the safety of Polish soldiers stationed in Iraq and the situation in the Middle East.
LOT and other European airlines — Lufthansa, KLM, Wizz Air — canceled flights over the Middle East region. Airspace over Iran, Iraq, and the Gulf states has been closed.
Polish embassy in Israel closed
The Polish consulate in Israel announced the temporary closure of the Consular Section to visitors. This is a direct consequence of Iranian missile attacks on Israel, which resulted in at least 9 deaths in the city of Beit Shemesh near Jerusalem.
For thousands of Poles and people of Polish descent living in Israel, this means hindered access to consular services at the most critical moment.
Kosiniak-Kamysz with Trump — a symbolic meeting
The visit of the Polish Minister of Defense to the White House has a dual dimension. In addition to discussions on the geopolitical situation, Kosiniak-Kamysz will participate in a ceremony during which Trump will posthumously award the Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis.
Ollis died on August 28, 2013, in Afghanistan, shielding a Polish officer — Lieutenant Karol Cierpica — with his own body during a suicide attack. This story is a symbol of Polish-American brotherhood in arms, particularly poignant at a time when the USA is conducting further military operations in the Middle East.
What’s next? Scenarios for the world
Iran announced 40 days of national mourning. Power was temporarily taken over by a council composed of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary, and a representative of the Guardian Council.
Analysts warn: the elimination of the leader does not mean the fall of the regime. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) remains a powerful force. “Eliminating Khamenei is not regime change. The IRGC is the regime,” noted the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).
Iran has already attacked tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, threatening a rise in oil prices on world markets. For Poles in the USA and at home, this potentially means higher fuel and energy prices in the coming weeks.
