The Aerocaribbean plane “fell to the ground in the region of Guacimal,” after the pilot reported an emergency, according to a statement read on state television.

The plane was carrying 40 Cubans and 28 foreigners leaving Santiago de Cuba ahead of the approach of Tropical Storm Tomas, according to the report. That included seven crew members.

The report said a search for survivors was underway in the area in Sancti Spiritu province, some 300 kilometers (180 miles) from Havana.
