Career Day will be introduced by CMLLC Chair Anne Duggan and CLAS Dean Wayne Raskind. One of the keynote speakers will be Richard Walawender of the longstanding Detroit Law Firm of Miller Canfield.
Walawender has unprecedented and vast global experience, and heads up the law firm’s Corporate and International Practice Groups. He will share the importance and value of language and culture enrichment in the global workforce. His firm, Miller-Canfield, has over 350 attorneys, and has international offices in Poland, Mexico, China and Canada.
He co-founded the firm’s Polish partnership in 1991 and served as the lead attorney on the first corporate commercial paper issuance of a U.S. company in Eastern Europe. The effort led to the establishment and capitalization of Solidarity Bank, one of the first private commercial banks in Poland.
Walawender got his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1986 and his bilingual skills have been indispensable to his achievements, his firm and his global clients.
The occasion will be an opportunity for all Metro Detroit area students along with the WSU campus community to learn firsthand about future trends in international employment. The WSU Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures will also host breakout tables with global specialists to facilitate specific cultural discussions.
Karen Majewski, Mayor of Hamtramck, will be on hand to discuss civic networking opportunities. There will also be representatives from General Motors, the Peace Corps, the U.S. government, a local translation firm, and WSU alumni who have found careers using their language and culture education. Among them two Slavic Studies alumni, Ela Baba and Sonia Kobylecki, will share their experiences in medicine and creating a small business.
Another Wayne Stater, Raymond Rolak, will showcase sports and entertainment opportunities in Poland. Rolak just returned from Warsaw, Krakow and Prague, teaching baseball to coaches and educators. There will be discussions on resource’s and actualities regarding global travel.
Furthermore, this event will be a great chance to network and learn about international opportunities available through WSU. Dr. Alina Klin and Dr. Laura Kline of the WSU Slavic Program will be available to answer questions regarding global issues and study abroad in Poland and Russia.
