The Castle of Pieskowa Skała, which dates from the 14th century, was reopened today after two years of reovations. Built by King Kazimerz the Great (1333-1370), who as the adage goes “inherited a Poland of wood and left one of stone,” the castle passed through several noble families over the centuries. It is the best surviving example of the so-called ‘Eagle’s Nests’, a chain of castles built along Poland’s 14th century border with Silesia, which then belonged to the Bohemian crown.
