Celebrating the Polish Aviation Day on August 28, the delegation of the Defense Attaché Bureau of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington paid tribute to the American airmen who volunteered for the Polish-Bolshevik war of 1920.
The initiator of the action was Merian C. Cooper, who initially managed to recruit seven pilots and one observer, and gradually more joined them. They all served in the 7th air squadron, named Kościuszkowska.
Three of them died and were buried at the Łyczakowski Cemetery in Lviv. The others returned to the USA, where their graves are now located. Only Merian C. Cooper’s ashes were scattered over the ocean at his will.
Flowers were laid on August 26th and August 27th on the graves of the following pilots: G. Crawford (Brooklyn, NY), K. Shrewsbury (Arlington, VA), E. Corsi (Staten Island, NY), H. Rorison (Wilmington, NC), K. Murray (Arlington) , VA), I. Maitland (Pleasant Hill, PA), and T. Garlick (Sparkill, NY).
