The Pope’s greeting was read by Fr. Andrea Roberto Ciucci, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Life, during the inaugural session of the conference held in the Aula Magna of the Pontifical Lateran University. The meeting is dedicated to the opportunities and challenges associated with artificial intelligence in conflict prevention and resolution, the protection of human rights, and the creation of new governance models.

Technology for the Common Good

Leo XIV expressed the hope that the conference proceedings would contribute to “renewing and strengthening a broad, shared commitment” to ensuring that technological innovations serve the common good. “In a world marked by conflicts and divisions, the development of artificial intelligence requires a vision inspired by wisdom and love,” the Pope wrote. He noted that technological progress should serve the dignity of every person and strengthen the bonds uniting the entire human family.

The Holy Father also referred to his encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas.” He recalled that “the design of mercy permeates history even today” and “serves as a compass for evangelical life in the digital age” (no. 230).

AI as a Tool for Dialogue and Peace

The Pope encouraged the conference participants to deepen their reflection on how artificial intelligence can serve the good of others. He pointed to its potential contribution to the development of dialogue, reconciliation, and solidarity among nations.

The goal, he emphasized, is to transform the fruits of technological innovation into “instruments of peace.” In this context, the development of artificial intelligence should not be viewed merely through the lens of technological capabilities, but also through responsibility for humanity and human relationships.

Leo XIV assured the participants of his prayers, asking that their efforts bear lasting fruit. In conclusion, he invoked God’s blessing upon all those gathered at the conference.
