During the conversation, the Holy Father once again assured of his closeness to all those experiencing the serious consequences of the recent earthquake that struck Colombia, in particular the families of the deceased, the injured, rescuers, and humanitarian workers.

Furthermore, the interlocutors exchanged views on the situation in the country and in the regions affected by the earthquake.

Hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injured

On August 10, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, resulting in 329 deaths and approximately 4,600 injuries. 247 people are still considered missing, and the number of people affected by the disaster has exceeded 314,000. The western regions of the country, particularly Cali and Pereira, suffered the most.
