The Associated Polish Home invites you to Dożynki 2026, the Polish harvest festival. Admission is free.

What will be happening
The program announced by the organizers promises five things: authentic Polish food, live folk music, dancing, crafts, and attractions for the whole family. The span of hours naturally divides the day into two parts. The afternoon belongs to families with children, craft stalls, and dining at tables still in full sunlight. Where do Dożynki come from
Dożynki is one of the oldest annual holidays in the Polish countryside—a thanksgiving for the completed harvest. When the last sheaf was brought in from the field, the reapers would weave a wreath from the final ears of grain and bring it to the farmer, who would reciprocate with a feast and celebration lasting into the night. It is a harvest festival, but above all, a celebration of the end of the year’s hardest work.
In America, this agricultural essence has evaporated. No one on Academy Road is cutting grain or calculating whether August was dry. What remains, however, is the underlying purpose that Dożynki always had: an excuse for the entire community to gather in one place, eat together, and dance. The Polish-American community adopted the name and the season, filling the rest in its own way—and that is precisely why Dożynki have survived in American cities longer than many customs that have faded away in Poland.
The wreath was the most important element of this holiday. It was woven from the final ears of grain, decorated with rowan berries, flowers, and ribbons, and carried by the best female reaper. In many parts of Poland, the wreath went first to the church for a blessing and only then to the manor or the farmer’s home. Thus, Dożynki had two dimensions at once—a thanksgiving and a purely worldly one, because after the ceremony began the celebration that people waited for all year.

The host of the celebration is the Associated Polish Home, known within the Polish community simply as the Polish Home, located at 9150 Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia. The event is sponsored by the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union, whose logo appears on the poster next to the emblem of the Polish Home.
Free admission is not a minor detail on such occasions. Ticketed Polish-American events attract those who are already part of the community and know why they are going. An open gate works differently—it also lets in the neighbor, the grandchild who no longer speaks Polish, and a random resident of the neighborhood. Dożynki are one of the few occasions when the Polish community shows itself to the outside world, rather than just to itself.
