This morning, July 31st, Pope Leo XIV received the American singer, songwriter, and poet Patti Smith in audience. The meeting took place in the Apostolic Palace.

On May 8th of this year, on the first anniversary of Cardinal Robert Prevost’s election as Pope, Patti Smith inaugurated the Holy See Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition in Venice.

In an interview granted to Vatican media in April of last year, a few days after the death of Pope Francis, Smith shared her personal memory of the Holy Father, whom she met during a general audience on April 10, 2013, and for whom she sang in the Vatican a year later.

“We must embrace the words that were dear to him—love, humility, compassion—accept them, believe in them in our hearts, and try, like some of our great teachers, to imitate Christ, to imitate Francis. Because if we imitate them, we are much closer to God,” she said.
