Coin with Michelangelo and jubilee coin
The first depicts the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, designed by the artist. Next to it are the artist’s birth year (1476) and the current year: 2026. It also features Michelangelo’s signature “Michelangelo” and a fragment of the Sistine Chapel, which the artist adorned with his famous frescoes. The coin dedicated to the Jubilee of the Holy Year 2025 features Pope Francis, opening the Holy Door of the Vatican Basilica, and the inscription “Jubilee 2025”.
New 20 and 25 euro coins
On the occasion of the recently concluded Holy Year, the Vatican also issued a 20 euro coin as part of the “Art and Faith” series. It depicts the Good Shepherd carrying a lost sheep. In addition, a silver 25 euro coin was issued, commemorating “Sede vacante MMXXV”, i.e., the period from the death of Pope Francis to the election of his successor, Leo XIV. The design was inspired by a painting by the Baroque Italian painter, Guido Reni. The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo, who manages the Vatican City State during the Sede vacante period. After the death of Pope Francis, this was Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.
