The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where Francis’ tomb is located and which the Pope frequently visited, praying before the image of Our Lady Salus Populi Romani, has published a communiqué regarding the ceremonies on the 1st anniversary of his death.

Commemorative plaque in the Pauline Chapel

On Tuesday, April 21, at 5:00 PM, a rosary service will be held in the Pauline Chapel. A plaque will also be unveiled, commemorating Pope Francis’ devotion to the Mother of God venerated in the image of Salus Populi Romani – Salvation of the Roman People. It was before this image that the Pope prayed 126 times during his pontificate, including at the beginning and end of every apostolic journey and during the pandemic.

Holy Mass and a message from Leo XIV

Then, at 6:00 PM, Holy Mass will begin, celebrated at the main altar. During the liturgy, a message from Pope Francis will be read, who will be in Malabo, Angola, that day, as part of his first apostolic journey to Africa.

Entry to the basilica will be possible from 4:00 PM, until capacity is reached. A large screen will be set up outside the church, on which the ceremonies will be broadcast.
