To commemorate the centennial of the Polish Nobel Prize-winning author's passing, the Mid-Manhattan Library features a presentation on the life and work of Henryk Sienkiewicz.

At the turn of the century, Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) was one of the most popular writers in the world. His action-packed historical epics, Quo Vadis and the Trilogy: With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Sir Michael (Pan Wolodyjowski) were translated into dozens of languages and influenced generations of writers. In 1905, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Historian Adam Weglowski will discuss Sienkiewicz and his era. The evening will culminate in a multilingual marathon reading of passages written by the Nobel laureate himself, drawing on The New York Public Library's international collection.

Adam Weglowski is a Polish journalist and writer. He specializes in history and Polish motifs in popular culture. He has written several non-fiction books, including A Polish-ed History of Everything (Bardzo polska historia wszystkiego), and is also the author of a series of mystery novels set in the 19th century. He is a journalist at the monthly Focus Historia, which deals with, among other things historical investigations. He also contributes to Tygodnik Powszechny, Sledczy, W podrozy and Zwierciadlo.

A Centennial Celebration of Henryk Sienkiewicz is co-presented by Mid-Manhattan Library and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.
