Education Live 24 by Peace One Day for the International Day of Education

UNESCO is dedicating the International Day of Education, celebrated on 24 January 2024, to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon that has snowballed in recent years with social media, damaging the fabric of our societies.

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrined the right to education. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, stipulates that countries shall make higher education accessible to all.

Today, there are 250 million children and youth who are not attending school, and 763 million adults who are unable to read or write. This is a clear violation of their right to education and it is unacceptable. It is time to bring about a transformation in the field of education. This year's theme for the International Day of Education is "Learning for Lasting Peace," and to mark the occasion, Peace One Day has organized Education Live 24.

Peace One Day has been supporting peace education and empowering the young generation to create a more peaceful world for several years. Millions of people have participated in Peace Day activities worldwide, and hundreds of organizations have carried out life-saving initiatives in conflict areas. As a result of Peace One Day’s efforts, UN member states have unanimously adopted a General Assembly resolution to establish 21 September as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace - Peace Day.

Among the speakers at Education Live 24 for the International Day of Peace were Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO, and Princess Angelika Jarosławska Sapieha, International Peace Ambassador, humanitarian, philanthropist, anti-landmine activist, and entrepreneur.

Other notable speakers included Holly Branson, Chair of Virgin Unite and Big Change, Carlos Sentis, Founder and CEO of World Innovation Alliance, and Geetha Murali, CEO of Room to Read, among others.
