Lipski Award Laureates Have Been Announced

The laureates of the 2023 Witold Lipski Award, honoring young Polish scientists for their outstanding contributions to the field of computer science, have been announced.

At the ceremony held at SGH Warsaw School of Economics, Aleksandra Kujawska, Director of the Kosciuszko Foundation's Warsaw Office, proudly presented three awards, collectively valued at 100,000 PLN (about 24,000 USD).

This year's distinguished winners are:

Dr. Michał Nowicki

Dr. Nowicki successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, focused on innovative approaches for multiple-sensory SLAM systems. He has actively participated in numerous research projects. His significant contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the FNP START scholarship in 2021 and a scholarship for exceptional young scientists from the Ministry of Education and Science in 2022. Additionally, his Ph.D. dissertation received the prestigious 1st place award for the best in artificial intelligence from the Polish Association of Artificial Intelligence (PSSI).

Dr. Adam Polak

Dr. Polak completed his studies at Jagiellonian University in Kraków under the guidance of Professor Pawel Idziak. During his doctoral studies, he undertook a six-month stint as a visiting student at MIT, where he was hosted by Professor Virginia Vassilevska Williams. Subsequently, he dedicated two years to his role as a postdoctoral researcher at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, collaborating with Professors Friedrich Eisenbrand and Ola Svensson. Currently, he serves as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, Germany, within the group of Professor Danupon Nanongkai.

Błażej Osiński

Błażej Osiński holds a dual degree from the University of Warsaw, with a master's degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the field of machine learning for optimizing sequential decision-making processes at the same institution. Additionally, he served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, working alongside Professor Sergey Levine. Before his full-time research, he gained valuable industry experience, including a role as a Site Reliability Engineer at Google, among others.

The awarded projects delved into the realms of applications of computer science and theoretical aspects of computer science.

We wholeheartedly congratulate the laureates!

The Lipski Award is one of the Kosciuszko Foundation's distinctions recognizing exceptional scientists and promoting Polish science globally. The KF's awards offer financial support, stimulate research, and foster international collaboration.

The Witold Lipski Award was created by three Polish computer scientists residing abroad, Krzysztof Apt, Wiktor Marek, and Mirosław Truszczyński. Established in 2005, on the twentieth anniversary of Lipski's premature passing, the award was a collaboration between the Foundation for the Development of Computer Science (Fundacja Rozwoju Informatyki) and the Polish Association for Calculating Machines (Polskie Stowarzyszenie dla Maszyn Liczących). Since 2022, the award has been administered by the Kosciuszko Foundation. Witold Lipski (1949-1985) was an eminent Polish computer scientist. In his short academic career, he authored several significant works database theory and algorithm analysis. He also published two books, "Combinatorics for Programmers" and (in collaboration with Wiktor Marek) "Combinatorial Analysis." Lipski collaborated with prominent computer scientists, including Christos Papadimitriou and Frank Preparata. He served as the advisor for Tomasz Imieliński (Rutgers University, USA) and Zbigniew Michalewicz (Adelaide University, Australia).
