Polish Saturday Schools "A Priority" For The Polish American Congress

November 15, 2011

Brooklyn, N.Y. .. Guest speaker at the recent meeting of the Downstate New York Division of the Polish American Congress (PAC) was Dr. Edmund Osysko (center), chairman of the PAC’s Komisja Oswiatowa or Education Commission.

Shown with Dr.Osysko are (from left): John Czaplinski, vice president of the Downstate N.Y. Division; Frank Milewski, president; Mrs. Edmund Osysko; Dr.Osysko; Grazyna Michalski, president of the Maria Konopnicka Education Society and Chet Szarejko, chairman of the Political Activities Committee of the Downstate Congress.

As head of the PAC’s Commission of Education, Dr. Osysko acts as liaison and coordinator between the National Office of the Polish American Congress in Chicago and the network of Saturday schools the Polish American community maintains throughout the United States.

Like several other ethnic groups, Polish Americans use Saturday mornings to hold classes that offer courses of study in language, history and culture of their country of origin. The curriculum is generally designed for children at the grade school and high school level.

“The kids who go to these Saturday schools are a special kind,” said Milewski.  “After they spend all week at their regular schools, they give up half their Saturday to study Polish.”

Dr. Osysko was appointed to chair the Education Commission at the time the late Edward Moskal was national president of the Congress.

Dr. Osysko has been affiliated with New York City’s Columbia University for many years and is a longtime member of the Downstate N.Y. Division.
