What is an area code overlay?

An overlay is the addition of another area code to the same geographic region as an existing area code(s).
The 929 overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code or telephone numbers, but it does require callers to dial the area code and the seven-digit number for all calls, including calls within the same area code. In New York, the 929 area code is being added to the region served by the 718 and 347 area codes.
Who is affected by the New York 718/347/929 Area Code Overlay?

Anyone who has a telephone number with 718 or 347 is affected. The new 929 area code will serve all customers in the same geographic region as the current 718 and 347 area codes. The 718 and 347 area codes generally cover the New York City boroughs of Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
What will change because of the New York 718/347/929 Area Code Overlay?

If your area code is 718 or 347, there will be no change to your existing area code, phone number, or dialing pattern. The 718 and 347 area codes already have mandatory 10-digit dialing in place and no changes will be made to those dialing patterns.
Will the New York 718/347/929 Area Code Overlay affect my service?
No, your service, which includes price of a call, your calling plan and coverage area, and other rates and services will not change because of the 929 overlay. All local calls will remain local regardless of the number of digits dialed.
When will the 929 area code go into effect?

As early as April 16, 2011, new lines or services may be assigned a phone number with the 929 area code. Calls within the new 929 area code will require that you dial the area code and seven-digit phone number.
When will 929 telephone numbers be assigned?

As soon as April 16, 2011, new telephone lines or services may be assigned phone numbers with the 929 area code. If you are assigned a phone number with the 929 area code, you will need to dial the area code for all calls, including calls to another 929 number.

If you are assigned a phone number with the 929 area code, you will need to dial the area code for all calls, including calls to another 929 number. In addition, because three area codes (718, 347 and 929) will serve the same area, customers with the 718, 347 and 929 area codes will need to dial the area code for all calls, including calls within the same area code.
