Call for Scholarship Applicants

January 07, 2012

Aspiring artists, musicians, dancers and other students of Polish descent, take note: the Polish Arts Club of Youngstown is now seeking applicants for its numerous scholarships.

Third- and fourth-year college students, as well as post-graduates, are encouraged to apply for the five $500 scholarships. Polish descent is not mandatory if an active member of the Polish Arts Club sponsors the student. All applicants will be required to submit a 500-word minimum essay on significant contributions of Polish nationals in American history or how has the perception of Polish people changed since the fall of the Berlin wall.

The deadline for scholarship applicants is January 30th. The winners will be announced at the group’s Annual Scholarship Art, Music & Tea Reception at the Butler Institute of American Art, Butler North on Sunday, February 19, 2011 from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M.

"We're delighted to again sponsor the scholarship program and urge all Mahoning Valley students of Polish descent to apply," said Mary Anne Mylnarski, Polish Arts Club president. "Poles have a proud history of academics, scientists and artists. These include Chopin, Madam Curie and Copernicus to name a few. Our scholarship program is one way to spotlight and encourage the most promising of our heritage’s next generation."

A panel of PAC members will select the winners after reviewing overall academic achievement, interest and involvement in their culture and faculty recommendations.

The scholarships are named in honor of Polish Arts Club members many of whom were professors at Youngstown State University and at other national institutions. The annual scholarships are part of an array of activities the PAC sponsors and supports throughout the Mahoning Valley every year.
