The program included events in Washington, including participation in an evening martial arts gala near the White House, as well as meetings with Poles – first in Maryland, and later in the trip at the John Paul II Polish Center in Clearwater, Florida. For Polish diaspora communities, especially those concentrated in the sunny south, this is an opportunity for direct contact with the head of state, which is not an everyday occurrence.
Polish Diaspora First – Mass in Silver Spring
Although the White House visit dominates press reports, the President himself began Sunday with a meeting with his compatriots. Karol Nawrocki attended Holy Mass at the Parish of Our Lady Queen of Poland and Saint Maximilian Kolbe in Silver Spring, Maryland, and afterward met with the parish community. This place has a special history with the Polish diaspora: the parish was founded through the personal initiative of Karol Wojtyła, then Archbishop of Krakow, who, in 1976, during his stay in Washington, sought to establish a Polish Catholic Mission. Pastoral care has been provided from the beginning by priests of the Society of Christ – a congregation founded in 1932 by the Primate of Poland, Cardinal August Hlond, specifically for the Polish diaspora scattered around the world.
After meeting with the faithful, the President addressed journalists at a brief press conference in Silver Spring, where he left no doubt about the priority of his visit. “Our strategic goal is this: the more American soldiers in Poland, the better; a permanent presence of U.S. soldiers is our goal,” he emphasized. He also stated that good relations between the Polish President and the leader of the United States are in Poland’s interest, and that, as he reported, Donald Trump regularly reiterates that Poland is an exemplary ally. The President then listed specific results of cooperation: Poland’s membership in the G20, the presence of ten thousand American soldiers, and F-35 aircraft.
The Polish diaspora theme is expected to run throughout the visit. After the Washington part, the President is scheduled to travel to Florida, where the Polish community – especially in the Tampa and Clearwater area – has long been one of the most vibrant centers of the Polish diaspora in the southern United States. It is there that the most important event of the entire trip, from the perspective of the Polish diaspora, is planned.
Florida: Meeting at the John Paul II Center
The heart of the Polish diaspora part of the visit is to be a meeting with Poles at the John Paul II Polish Center in Clearwater, Florida, scheduled, according to reports, for Tuesday. This is a special place: the center, named after the Polish Pope, has for years served as a hub of religious, cultural, and social life for the Polish diaspora in western Florida. The visit of the incumbent President of the Republic to such a place is of immeasurable importance to the local community, for many Poles from the region, it will be the first opportunity in their lives to see the head of state up close.
The choice of Florida fits into a broader picture of the Polish presence in the state. This region has long been considered one of the most vibrant Polish diaspora centers in the southern United States, with Polish parishes, clubs, and organizations forming a lively community fabric there. The decision to make Clearwater one of the vstops on the visit clearly indicates that the presidential side treats the Polish diaspora not as an addition to a political trip, but as one of its essential goals.
White House Gala – Political Background
The direct reason for the President’s visit, however, was an invitation from Donald Trump. On Sunday, June 14, the American leader celebrates his eightieth birthday – a date coinciding with Flag Day in the USA – and one of the main points of the visit is expected to be participation in the UFC Freedom 250 mixed martial arts gala, organized near the White House as part of the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Nawrocki is to be one of the guests. As the Polish side informed, the idea of organizing the spectacle in such an unusual location came from Trump himself, a known fan of the discipline.
Here, however, precision is needed, as many announcements have accumulated around the visit, not all of which are firm. The presidential side, through Minister Marcin Przydacz, announced that Nawrocki and Trump would have a one-on-one conversation. At the same time, as the media pointed out, the official calendar of the American President did not include a formal meeting with the Polish leader. In other words, the conversation is announced by the Polish side, but at the time of writing, there is no official confirmation from Washington. The visit itself – as also emphasized – is not an official state visit, but results from a private invitation.
What is to be discussed
Regardless of the meeting format, the Polish side indicated specific topics that would dominate the talks in Washington. These are primarily issues of Poland’s security, the state of bilateral relations, and energy and economic cooperation. In the background remains the issue of the presence of American troops in Poland – a topic that has returned to the Polish public debate in recent weeks during discussions about a permanent U.S. base, and today the President indicated it as his priority. In Silver Spring, Nawrocki also drew attention to tensions within Polish politics, assessing that it is sometimes difficult to enforce agreements made at the highest level. “If there were a government capable of taking advantage of the favorable situation that has emerged in the relationship between the two presidents, we would be much further along,” he said. Beyond the official part in the capital, the President is also scheduled to speak on Capitol Hill with Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune.
It is worth noting that the White House gala is not without controversy, even within the United States. As reported by the media, the Public Integrity Project organization filed a lawsuit challenging the event, citing, among other things, a potential conflict of interest. This is an internal American issue, but it affects the atmosphere of the entire event in which the Polish President participates.
What this means for the Polish Diaspora
For the American Polish diaspora, the signal from this visit is clear, regardless of how the political talks in Washington unfold. A president who, despite a busy schedule, finds time for a Mass with compatriots in Maryland and a separate meeting in Florida shows that the Polish diaspora is a real point of reference for Warsaw, not just a backdrop for photos. For Poles from Tampa, Clearwater, and the surrounding areas, the coming days will be an opportunity to feel that distance from their homeland does not mean that the country has forgotten about them. And how the individual meetings will actually proceed, and whether the announced one-on-one conversation with Trump will take place, will be shown in the coming days, and we will keep you informed.
