Its purpose is to determine whether a child qualifies for a place in New York City’s gifted and talented schools or programs. Such tests are widespread throughout the country and used to admit students to gifted programs. They are designed to provide a balanced, accurate, and unbiased insight into a child’s verbal and non-verbal intellectual abilities.
Should my child take the New York City Gifted and Talented Test?
Regardless of your child’s abilities, taking the New York City Gifted and Talented Test is never a waste of time.
It can be difficult to assess whether or not your child is considered gifted. In this regard, the New York City Gifted and Talented Test does not function solely as an administrative tool, but is also a way to accurately identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses. However, regardless of whether the goal is admission to a specific program or an accurate understanding of your child’s abilities, proper preparation for the test is essential. Adequate preparation is the best way to get the most out of this test.
How do I determine if my child meets the appropriate conditions?
For any Gifted and Talented (G&T) program your child applies to, high test scores are most important.
Gifted and Talented programs cover all 32 districts of New York City. There are about a hundred such programs throughout the city. Students can only apply for a place in one of these programs located in their district of residence – only then will their application be considered. Schools require a score of 90 or higher.
Citywide Gifted and Talented Programs are available to all students within the five boroughs. These programs are more demanding and a score of 97 or higher is needed to be considered.
