In a letter addressed to presbyters, deacons, consecrated persons, and lay faithful, the hierarch noted that the Church “is committed to promoting peace in all dimensions of the Nation’s life” and called for prayer to “regain the social harmony and fraternity that we need.”
A fragment particularly strongly emphasizes the need for “cooperation in healing the wounds” of those directly and indirectly affected by violence — which, in the reality of Mexico, means both victims of organized crime activities and their families, as well as local communities living in the shadow of conflicts.
The Primate’s appeal is set against the backdrop of ongoing security instability in several regions of the country, linked to intensified clashes between drug cartels and federal forces’ operations. In recent weeks, media have reported on road blockades, acts of arson, and temporary restrictions on public institutions’ activities in some states, which deepens the sense of social uncertainty.
Cardinal Retes also entrusted the current situation to Our Lady of Guadalupe, calling on the faithful to become “authentic builders of peace in the likeness of Christ.”
