Surgery today
As previously announced, the Holy Father went to the Gemelli Polyclinic on Tuesday, October 13, where he was admitted to the hospital.
According to the latest statement, this afternoon Leo XIV will undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. The procedure will be performed by a thoracic surgery team led by Prof. Stefano Margaritora.
The Pope asked for prayers
Leo XIV personally announced the need for the surgery on Sunday, October 11, at the end of the Angelus prayer. He explained that during check-ups, doctors discovered a small, well-localized lung nodule. Following the specialists’ recommendations, he decided to have it surgically removed.
The Holy Father thanked the faithful for their spiritual closeness and asked for prayers for his intention.
Due to the hospitalization, the Prefecture of the Papal Household announced the suspension of all public and private audiences of Leo XIV until October 20.
Further information regarding the Holy Father’s hospitalization is expected to be released this evening.
