The EITC is an essential anti-poverty tool, returning federal, state, and New York City money to those making less than $38,000. More than just welcome money for existing expenses, an EITC refund can be a powerful way for working families and individuals to get ahead. To help eligible New Yorkers get as much as $6,000 at tax time, Mayor Bloomberg and the Department of Consumer Affairs have put together the most comprehensive EITC Coalition in the country with more than 150 partners–now in its fifth year! Large-scale campaigns like the EITC are a focus of DCA’s Office of Financial Empowerment, which is working to empower New Yorkers to make their hard-earned money work for them.
So, Do You Qualify for the EITC? Visit DCA’s EITC home page ( http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/initiatives/eitc.shtml ) for
important information, including free downloadable brochures available in English and 10 additional languages. You can also Dial 311 to learn EITC eligibility requirements based on your income, marital status, and number of dependents. Operators can assist callers in up to 170 different languages!
If you qualify for the EITC, the City’s Coalition partners can help you file your taxes for free! The Coalition manages more than 40 free tax preparation sites in all five boroughs. To locate the site nearest you, click here or Dial 311.
And, if you qualify for the EITC–but never claimed it–you can file your taxes for three years back, as much as tripling a refund!
Over the past four years, the NYC EITC Coalition has helped nearly 80,000 New Yorkers get more than $100 million in EITC refunds at free tax preparation sites. For an ever-increasing number of New Yorkers, getting money back begins by dialing 3-1-1.
Bottom line, it can literally pay to call 311!
