Krzysztof Penderecki, the world-famous composer received an honorary doctorate from the University of Music in Bucharest
October 17, 2014
One of Poland’s greatest contemporary composers and conductor, Krzysztof Penderecki received an honorary doctorate from the University of Music in Bucharest on 16 September. On Friday, 17 October, he is taking part in a season inaugural concert in the Romanian Radio’s Concert Studio.
Season inaugurations by the Romanian Radio Orchestra are always special cultural events in Bucharest. This year, the orchestra conducted by Tiberiu Soare will perform the Polish composer’s works—“the Capriccio for Violin and Orchestra” and “the Chaconne for String Orchestra,” which are a part of the famous “Polish Requiem,” as well as works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Charismatic Patrycja Piekutowska, the first Polish musician to receive the prestigious Cannes Classical Award in 2008, will be the orchestra’s first violin.
Krzysztof Penderecki is one of Poland’s most recognisable modern composers. Born in Debica in 1933, he has won international renown for works employing applying novel sound and notation solutions. His most famous compositions include “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima”, “Polish Requiem” and “Seven Gates of Jerusalem.”
