It is known as a QR code. First, the "QR" in QR code is an abbreviation for Quick Response. The quick response is referring to the speed to which devices, usually mobile smart phones, can read the two-dimensional barcode.
Though they’re sometimes likened to UPC barcodes, they’re much more powerful and have become one of the hottest mobile applications in today’s marketing world. Initially used for inventory control, QR codes are now available to anyone with a smartphone by simply downloading a free scanning program (app).
