“The Pope’s night passed peacefully. Further information will be provided during the day,” the Holy See Press Office announced on Wednesday morning via its Telegram channel.

The surgery was uneventful

Leo XIV underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 13 at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic. According to the evening medical bulletin, doctors removed the lower lobe of the right lung. Intraoperative histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, which had already been suspected based on prior examinations.

The Holy Father was in the operating room for approximately three hours, while the procedure itself lasted about 90 minutes. The surgery concluded successfully with no complications. The Pope woke up properly from anesthesia and, after a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the tenth floor of the Gemelli Polyclinic.

The surgical team was led by Prof. Stefano Margaritora.

Prayer for the Holy Father

On Tuesday evening, in the Chapel of St. John Paul II at the Gemelli Polyclinic, Cardinal Baldo Reina, Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, led the recitation of the Rosary for the intentions of Leo XIV.

The Pope announced the planned surgery personally on Sunday, October 11, during the Angelus prayer, at which time he asked the faithful for their prayers.

The Holy Father remains under the care of doctors at the Gemelli Polyclinic. Further updates regarding his health are expected later today.
