You don’t necessarily have to go to the hospital, but it is very important that you are examined by a doctor experienced in injuries and post-accident treatment. Once you take care of your health, then go to a lawyer. You have two years for this. A lawyer will help you get compensation for health injuries and lost property. Remember that a lawyer is on your side. However, don’t count on your insurance. The insurance company will want to reduce its exposure to costs, both those related to compensation and those related to your treatment.
So should I contact my insurance?
Yes. Most car insurance companies require policyholders to report any accident quickly. Your insurance company will want to gather all basic information about the accident – whether you were at fault or not. Sometimes the insurance company will want your consent to record a statement about the accident. If you or passengers were injured in the accident, or if you suspect that the insurance company will claim you are not insured, or if you have doubts about the scope of your insurance, we advise you to contact a lawyer before taking the next step, and certainly before giving permission to record the conversation.
NOTE: You should never give a statement to another driver’s insurance company without consulting your own attorney. However, you must keep in mind that failure to provide information to your insurer early enough may result in the loss of accident compensation. You must act in good faith and not delay the process of providing information to your insurance.
