As stated in the communiqué from the Holy See Press Office, the Spanish royal couple met with the Holy Father in audience and were subsequently received by papal collaborators: Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
“During the cordial discussions at the Secretariat of State, appreciation was expressed for the good relations between the Holy See and Spain,” the Vatican Press Office reported, emphasizing that a unique moment in these relations will be the Holy Father’s upcoming apostolic journey to Spain. In this context, some current issues concerning the situation in the country and the mission of the Church in society were touched upon.
The discussions also covered regional and international issues. Among other things, the “importance of continuous commitment to promoting peace and strengthening the principles and values that underpin international coexistence” was emphasized.
At 12:30 PM, a ceremony began in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major for the King of Spain to receive the honorary title of Proto-Canon of the Liberian Chapter, in accordance with a centuries-old tradition.
From June 6 to 12, Leo XIV will make an apostolic visit to Spain. This will be the first papal visit to the country since 2011, when Benedict XVI went there for World Youth Day in Madrid.
