“In the Christian vision, respect is not merely correctness: it is a demanding form of love that expresses itself in guarding the other without appropriating them, in accompanying without dominating, in serving without humiliating. From this foundation arises the possibility of transparent, mature, and safe relationships,” the message emphasized.
The letter, signed by the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, was addressed to the President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi. The meeting, convened in Rome by the National Service for the protection of minors and vulnerable persons at the Italian Episcopal Conference, is held under the motto “Respect. Building Authentic Relationships” – reports Vatican News.
Protection as an element of community culture
As noted in the letter, the protection of minors and vulnerable persons cannot be understood solely as a set of norms and procedures, but requires “wisdom” that encompasses the functioning style of communities, the exercise of authority, the formation of those responsible for education, vigilance towards environments, and transparency of conduct.
“Where every person is recognized in their dignity and protected in their freedom, parishes, associations, and movements are credible, capable of accompanying, educating, and protecting; where, however, respect is lacking, relationships become impoverished, distorted, and can cause serious wounds,” it was written.
Victims
As Vatican News reports, particular attention was paid to victims of abuse. “Their wounds demand sincere closeness, humble listening, and perseverance in seeking what is right and reparable,” the letter emphasized.
It was added that the Church community matures when it “does not defend itself against the pain of those who have suffered, but allows itself to be moved by it; when it does not downplay evil, but acknowledges it; when it does not close itself off in fear of scandal, but undertakes the demanding paths of truth, justice, and healing.”
“Culture of prevention” and care
As indicated, the meeting has significance beyond the organizational dimension and constitutes a call to develop a “culture of prevention, which is primarily a culture of evangelical care.”
The Pope’s Encouragement
The letter concludes with the assurance: “Pope Leo XIV encourages you to continue working with confidence, so that in the Italian dioceses, communities may develop where the most vulnerable are welcomed, protected, and loved. He entrusts each of you and your ministry to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, and wholeheartedly imparts his apostolic blessing.”
