The most serious charge carries a penalty of life imprisonment. Allen appeared in court in a blue prison jumpsuit, escorted by U.S. Marshals. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh ordered him to remain in custody until a detention hearing scheduled for Thursday, April 30. A preliminary hearing is set for May 11. Court documents indicate that Allen had prepared for the attack in advance: in August 2025, he purchased a shotgun, in October 2023, a pistol, then traveled to Washington by train from Los Angeles via Chicago, and checked into the Washington Hilton hotel on April 24.
Letter to Family – “it’s my duty”
Shortly before the attack – just before 8:40 PM Eastern Time – Allen sent a text file titled “Apology and Explanation” to his family and former employer. According to the criminal complaint, the message might have been pre-scheduled for automatic sending. In it, Allen identified the Trump administration as the target of the attack, described a hierarchy of “targets” – from highest to lowest rank – and noted that the Secret Service was to be attacked “only if necessary”. He claimed he planned to use buckshot to “minimize civilian casualties.” He apologized to his parents. He signed off as “Cole ‘coldForce’ ‘Friendly Federal Assassin’ Allen” – “Friendly Federal Assassin.”
Allen’s brother, living in Connecticut, called the New London police at 10:49 PM – more than two hours after the shooting in Washington. He informed officers about an email received from Cole. This is a significant correction to earlier reports: the brother’s call came after the incident, not before it.
What exactly happened at 8:40 PM
The federal complaint and attached affidavit reveal the chronology of the attack. Allen had booked a room at the Washington Hilton hotel for three nights, starting Friday, April 24 – meaning he arrived at the scene two days in advance. According to the complaint, he traveled to Washington by train from Los Angeles via Chicago: he left California on April 21, passed through Chicago on April 23, arrived in the U.S. capital around 1:00 PM on April 24, and checked into the hotel around 3:00 PM. Traveling by train might have allowed him to avoid airline procedures for transporting weapons – airlines allow weapons in checked baggage, but only after declaring them to staff, in a locked rigid container, and after additional inspection.
On Saturday, April 25, around 8:40 PM, Allen approached a magnetometer on the hotel’s terrace level, leading towards the ballroom where the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was taking place. He was holding a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Allen ran and passed through the magnetometer, holding the weapon. At that moment, Secret Service officers heard a loud shot. One of the agents was hit in the chest. A bulletproof vest protected him from death or serious injury. The hit agent drew his service weapon and fired several shots at the assailant. Allen fell to the floor, sustaining minor injuries – but according to the criminal complaint, he was not hit by any bullets. He was apprehended by agents before he could get near the ballroom. Trump said at a press conference on Sunday that the assailant had “a long way to go” – which court documents now confirm.
Upon apprehension, Allen had a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38 caliber pistol. According to prosecutors, he also had three knives. He purchased the shotgun on August 17, 2025, from a dealer in California. The pistol – on October 6, 2023, in another Californian city. This means the arsenal had been accumulating for over two years.
Three Charges, One Potential Life Sentence
The first charge – attempted assassination of the President of the United States, under 18 U.S.C. § 1751(c) – can result in a life sentence. This is the same paragraph under which Ryan Routh was convicted in February 2026 for attempting to assassinate Trump in September 2024 on a golf course in West Palm Beach. The second charge – interstate transportation of firearms and ammunition with intent to commit a felony, 18 U.S.C. § 924(b) – carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. The third charge – discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1)(A)(iii) – means, if convicted, at least 10 additional years in prison, usually served consecutively after the sentence for the underlying offense.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro sat in the front row of the courtroom, which was a significant signal for American observers. “The defendant intended to do as much damage and cause as much harm as he could,” Pirro said Saturday evening at a press conference. “The checkpoint just outside the ballroom, where thousands of people were preparing for the president’s speech, worked. No one was injured, but it is clear where this defendant was headed.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine stated directly during Monday’s hearing: “He attempted to assassinate the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. We ask the court for Allen’s preventive detention.” Allen had two public defenders assigned to him at his request. Tezira Abe, one of the defenders, emphasized that Allen had no prior arrests or convictions. However, this did not help – the judge ordered continued detention until Thursday’s detention hearing. Initially, prosecutors also announced a charge concerning assault on a federal officer, but Monday’s criminal complaint includes three charges: attempted assassination of the president and two charges related to firearms.
Who is Cole Allen
According to data released on Monday, Cole Tomas Allen was born 31 years ago, in 1995. He lived in Torrance, a city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. By profession, he was a math and English teacher at a private tutoring company, where he received the “Teacher of the Month” award in December 2024 – information confirmed by CNN, citing his LinkedIn profile. Previously, he studied at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), a prestigious university in Pasadena, where he graduated in 2017. Caltech confirmed to MS NOW that a person with that name did indeed graduate in 2017, but no further information was disclosed.
According to information provided to NBC News by a senior administration official, Allen was reportedly associated with a group called “The Wide Awakes.” His sister allegedly told investigators that Cole participated in “No Kings” protests in California. This information was not included in the criminal complaint in this form and comes from officials’ and family’s accounts, not from a court document.
Trump said on Sunday that, in his opinion, Allen’s writings showed hatred for Christians. However, Monday’s court documents do not directly confirm this claim – investigators describe writings containing political grievances, religious references, and explanations regarding the attack plan, rather than an unambiguous anti-Christian manifesto.
Patel: changes in security procedures
FBI Director Kash Patel appeared on “Fox and Friends” on Monday morning, where he announced that the Secret Service and FBI would analyze the security measures from Saturday evening and that procedures for similar events would have to be different. Patel drew attention to the scale of the threat – the president, vice president, a significant part of the cabinet, and 2,000 journalists were in one room. This statement explains why Allen chose this particular dinner – no other event this year gathers so many high-ranking American officials in one room.
For comparison, after the assassination attempt in July 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the House of Representatives formed a special task force to investigate the incident within days, and the first hearings took place within two weeks. This time, the reaction is subdued. The House Oversight Committee requested a briefing from the Secret Service, but there are no urgent calls for hearings or testimonies. According to Fox News informants, “the system primarily worked” – Trump was safe, the agent survived, and the perpetrator was apprehended. However, questions about the location of security zones, and whether the entire hotel should be closed during the event, are emerging in Sunday’s and Monday’s discussions.
Political repercussions – Melania vs. Kimmel
Already on Sunday, the political storm surrounding the incident extended beyond Allen’s case itself. First Lady Melania Trump publicly condemned Jimmy Kimmel, host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, for “hateful and violent rhetoric.” Two days before the shooting, Kimmel joked on his show that Melania had the “glow of a future widow” – referring to rumors about the president’s health. After Saturday’s incident, Trump publicly called for Kimmel to be fired. The White House presented the incident as a result of the media’s “systemic demonization” of the president, specifically pointing to Kimmel.
This is a moment worth noting from a Polish-American perspective. After the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler in 2024, similar discussions continued for weeks. Democrats accused Republicans of fostering an atmosphere of violence. Republicans accused Democrats of the same. Every assassination attempt – Reagan in 1981, Ford in 1975, Kennedy in 1963 – triggered a similar wave. This time, the tone is even more polarized. The Polish diaspora in America, like all of America, finds itself in the midst of a divided society where political violence is becoming an everyday, unexceptional topic.
What’s next
Thursday, April 30 – detention hearing. The judge will decide whether Allen can be released on bail before trial. Given the nature of the charges, the travel distance from California, and the weight of the evidence, the prevailing belief is that he will remain in custody until trial. May 11 – preliminary court hearing, where the prosecution will have to demonstrate that there is reasonable suspicion of a crime. Allen may also be formally indicted by a grand jury before this date – in which case the preliminary hearing will be canceled.
Meanwhile, the discussion about presidential security and how the United States responds to repeated assassination attempts is just beginning. Trump asked the White House Correspondents’ Association to organize another dinner within 30 days. The WHCA is currently assessing the situation. But one thing is certain: in the Washington Hilton ballroom on Saturday, April 25, 2026, American politics changed. We just don’t know which way yet.
